Hunger Strike is an important part in Shaheed Bhagat Singh's life because after hunger strike took place, his popularity among common Indians extended beyond Punjab. Bhagat Singh was arrested for assembly bomb throwing incident and he was re-arrested for the murder of J.P Saunders. He was actually supposed to kill James A. Scott.
James A. Scott was the person who was responsible for Lala Lajpat Rai's death. Scott was the superintendent of police and he ordered the police to Baton Charge the protesters including Rai. Rai was injured and he died of a heart attack. Government denied any role in Rai's death. Doctors thought his death might have been hastened by the injuries. Although Singh did not witnessed the event, he still vowed to take revenge and he accidentally killed Saunders instead of Scott.
After Singh was arrested, he witnessed discrimination between European and Indian prisoners, and he led other prisoners in a hunger strike to protest this. They demanded equality in standards of food, clothing, toiletries and other hygienic necessities as well as availability of books and daily newspapers for political prisoners. They also demanded that they should not be forced to do manual labor or any undignified work in the jail.
The government tried to break the strike by placing different food items in the prison cells to test the hungry prisoners resolve. Water pitchers were filled with milk so that either prisoners remained thirsty or either broke their strike. No one lost strength and they continued their strike. The authorities then attempted forcing food using tubes into the prisoners, but they were resisted.
Since the activities of hunger strike had gained popularity and attention among people nationwide, the government decided to advance the start of the Saunders murder trial also known as the Lahore conspiracy case. Singh was transported to borstal jail, Lahore. By then, he had lost 14 pounds from 116 pounds and was still on hunger strike.
